Meet the Founder

“This is a movement. This is about teaching our children to embrace their Arab pride. This is about giving the gift of the Arabic language, to your family, to your friends, and to the world.”

ARABOH.com was founded to promote the education of the Arabic language, particularly among Arabs living outside the Arab world. It can be very difficult for Arab families living in non-Arab countries to provide their children with an Arab upbringing and the Arabic education they would receive in their home countries. ARABOH.com is an online community for educational books with an Arabic theme that will allow future Arab generations to grow up reading, writing and thinking in their mother tongue.

We provide books in Arabic, Arabic/English, and Arabic/French. Our books are classified by age as 3+, 4+, 5+, etc, because at ARABOH.com we believe there is no age limit to learning. If you are an adult learning Arabic for the very first time, you can still find some great books in our 3+ section! ARABOH.com will ship products to most countries in the world, and our books come from some of the world’s most respected, quality publishing houses.

ARABOH.com also donates a percentage of annual profits to charities that aid children in the Arab world. So every book you purchase contributes to a worthy cause. This is a movement. This is about teaching our children to embrace their Arab pride. This is about giving the gift of the Arabic language, to your family, to your friends, and to the world.

Marhaba, and welcome to ARABOH.com! My name is Jinanne Tabra, I am an Iraqi born and raised in the UK. I grew up in Scotland, and like most of the Arab children living in non-Arab countries, I struggled to learn the Arabic language without access to Arabic books, toys, and other learning materials. I attended a public English school on weekdays and complained every weekend when my parents sent me to an ‘Arabic school’ run by our small local Arab community. I complained because learning Arabic didn’t seem fun! Our imported textbooks were boring (but there was no alternative), we didn’t have Arabic educational toys or computer games, and as hard as our teachers and parents would try to motivate us, my friends and I just wanted to spend our weekends at the park like the other non-Arab kids!

I feel very thankful now that our community did what they could to raise us as Arabs. My family and I moved to the gulf several years ago and I’m thankful that I can have conversations in Arabic, read an Arabic magazine or write an Arabic letter. But our children shouldn’t have to experience that delayed appreciation. As a parent teaching your child Arabic, how many times have you said “you’ll be thankful for this someday”? Why is it that our kids are so excited about learning English, French or Spanish, but Arabic seems like such a task?

I believe there is a need for the very best Arabic educational tools to be made available to every family living in non-Arab regions. I believe our children should feel proud to be Arab and promote the true message of Arab peace throughout the world. I believe this has never been as important as it is today.

In May 2008, I graduated from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. The support of my family, friends and college community has fueled my dream for ARABOH.com. I hope you will be a part of this dream. I hope you will join us in reviving the Arabic language. Welcome to our family.

I would love to hear your ideas, responses or your own stories – email me at jinanne.tabra@araboh.com so we can work together for the future of Arab generations.
